This tour is perfect for those looking for an in depth discovery of China in a short amount of time. Covering the busy city of Shanghai, a Yangtze River Cruise and a visit to the ancient city of Xian, this tour also travels to Chengdu to see the Giant Pandas. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is dedicated to panda conservation and prides itself in its natural landscapes for this native species to live in.
Travel to Beijing where you will have the opportunity to walk along the Juyongguan Pass of the Great Wall of China. Several parts of the wall were constructed in the 7th century BC, and throughout history and different emperors rule, sections were added to it. Although many sections of the wall have been reconstructed and repaired, many parts remain and the wall is still as awe inspiring as ever. Offering an in depth journey through China, this itinerary includes many sights of the magnificent country that is China.
DAY 1: AUSTRALIA TO SHANGHAI
Fly with Cathay Pacific Airways to Shanghai for a two night stay. Shanghai is a city of history, style and vibrancy, and has been a major administrative, shipping and trading town for centuries. These days, Shanghai is the perfect example of the booming economy of mainland China.
DAY 2: SHANGHAI
Enjoy a full-day tour to explore this cosmopolitan city, including the antiquities at the Shanghai Museum, cobbled streets of the Old Town and peaceful Yu Gardens. This evening, dine at the Pudong Shangri-La’s Gui Hua Lou Chinese Restaurant. (B,L,D)
DAY 3: SHANGHAI TO YICHANG – YANGTZE RIVER
Fly to Yichang. Upon arrival you will be transferred to Yichang wharf to board your Victoria Cruises vessel for the next four nights, cruising along one of the world’s greatest and most picturesque waterways, the Yangtze River. (B,L)
DAYS 4-6: YANGTZE RIVER CRUISE
During your time on board you will pass through spectacular landscapes, tranquil sceneries and learn about the local history. Enjoy shore excursions to explore the fascinating tributary streams. Relax on board your cruise ship and take advantage of the services provided on board. (B,L,D)
DAY 7: CHONGQING TO CHENGDU
Disembark in Chongqing and transfer to Chengdu. This evening, wander among the bustling street markets or simply relax in your hotel. (B,L,D)
DAY 8: CHENGDU TO XIAN
Visit the famous Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to see these famous animals in an environment similar to their natural habitat. Later you will fly to the historic city of Xian, the former imperial capital of China. This evening, feast on a traditional Shui Jiao Dumpling banquet at the well-known De Fa Chang Restaurant and enjoy a performance of music and dance dating back to the Tang Dynasty. (B,L,D)
DAY 9: XIAN
Explore one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th Century, the UNESCO World Heritage listed Terracotta Warriors and Horses. Travel to the ancient City Wall, one of the best preserved in all of China. Later this afternoon, wander through the lively Muslim Quarter and explore the Islamic food markets, where you will be able to observe a way of life which has existed for centuries. The remainder of the afternoon is at free at your leisure. (B,L)
DAY 10: XIAN TO BEIJING
See the Little Wild Goose Pagoda and explore the Shaanxi Provincial Museum. Fly to Beijing, the capital of the People’s Republic of China which has an unequalled wealth of history and imperial wonders. Enjoy dinner at a well-known and favourite place for locals, Rose Town Restaurant. (B,L,D)
DAY 11: BEIJING
Stroll though the famous Tiananmen Square, passing Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum, to enter the treasure filled Forbidden City through the Gate of Heavenly Peace. This afternoon, discover the landscaped beauty of the Summer Palace, which covers an area of over 3km. To complete your day, enjoy a rickshaw ride through the traditional Hutong district where old Beijing is hidden in a maze of small alleyways. You will have a chance to visit a local home and enjoy a cup of tea with a family. (B,L)
DAY 12: BEIJING
It is the lifetime dream of many to visit the Great Wall of China and you will have the opportunity to walk on this magnificent man-made wonder which is more than 5,000km in length. This afternoon, visit the unique Temple of Heaven which was originally constructed in the 15th Century. The grounds of the temple are popular with locals undertaking daily exercise, playing cards, musical instruments or dancing. This evening, you will dine on the famous dish of Beijing, Peking Duck, at Quanjude Restaurant. (B,L,D)
DAY 13: DEPART BEIJING
This morning is free at your leisure before you are transferred to the airport to board your overnight flight to Australia. (B) Arrive home today.
