Start your tour with a visit to the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. One cannot travel to China without visiting Beijing and the Great Wall to marvel at the immensity of this wonderful site, which stretches for over 5,000km. You will also have the opportunity to view the amazing ancient Terracotta Warriors and Horses in Xian.
One of the incredible areas that this tour visits is the UNESCO World Heritage listed Jiuzhaigou (Nine Villages Valley) in Sichuan Province. DAY 1: AUSTRALIA TO SHANGHAIFly with Cathay Pacific Airways to Shanghai for a two night stay. Adelaide, Perth and Darwin passengers may depart one day earlier.
DAY 2: SHANGHAITour this exciting city, visiting the beautiful Yu Gardens, the Old Town and see the superb antiques and fine arts at the Shanghai Museum. Take a stroll along the famous Bund. This evening cruise along the stunning Huangpu River. Dinner will be a banquet of traditional Shanghai cuisine.
DAY 3: SHANGHAI TO BEIJINGFly to Beijing, the capital city of China. This afternoon tour the unique 15th-century Temple of Heaven, one of the most perfect examples of Ming architecture. It has four gates, one at each compass point. The groups of locals that gather here to sing folk songs, practice Tai-Chi and sword dancing, play chess or gossip will be the highlight of your visit. This evening sample the delicious local delicacy, Peking Duck.
DAY 4: BEIJINGBegin your sightseeing with a stroll through the famous Tiananmen Square, passing Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum and visit the treasure-filled Forbidden City. Home to the Ming and Qing dynasties for over 500 years, the Forbidden City is the world’s largest palace complex. This evening see an exciting acrobatics performance.
DAY 5: BEIJINGIt is often quoted in Beijing that ‘you have not been to China until you have climbed the Great Wall’. Stretching from the Shanhaiguan Pass on the east coast to the Gobi Desert in the west, it is more than 5,000km long. Walk along the wall, admire the panoramic views and reflect on the immensity of the material and labour required for its construction. Later this afternoon explore the landscaped beauty of the Summer Palace.
DAY 6: BEIJING TO XIANFly to Xian. Visit the Little Wild Goose Pagoda, a 13-storey-tall multi-eave pagoda built during the Tang Dynasty. Tour the renowned Shaanxi Provincial Museum. This evening, feast on a traditional Shui Jiao Dumpling banquet, while enjoying a performance of music and dance dating back to the Tang Dynasty.
DAY 7: XIANVisit one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th Century, the life-sized Terracotta Warriors and Horses. Walk along the ancient City Wall, one of the best preserved in all of China. Later, stroll through the colourful and lively Muslim Quarter and explore the Islamic food markets.
DAY 8: XIAN TO NINE VILLAGES VALLEYFly to the breathtaking Nine Villages Valley, a botanical area that is heavily forested and home to many protected plant species. Entering the valley is like being transported into a different world, where crystal-clear lakes gather at the foot of every waterfall and rich coloured forests are dotted with flowers. You will stay in the valley for the next two nights to further explore the natural beauty and be amazed by its unforgettable imagery. DAY 9: NINE VILLAGES VALLEY Enjoy the day walking through the Nine Villages Valley. You will also visit the beautiful Changhai Lake.
DAY 10: NINE VILLAGES VALLEY TO CHENGDUExplore Huanglong Mountain. Huanglong is renowned for its hundreds of sparkling mineral pools, where beautiful colours intertwine and the water cascades down the mountainside. This afternoon fly to Chengdu.
DAY 11: CHENGDUVisit the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to see these famous animals in an environment similar to their natural habitat. The base also includes a protected wilderness and breeding area.
DAY 12: CHENGDU – LESHANTravel to Leshan and marvel at the Grand Buddha, an enormous statue carved into the side of the Lingyun Mountain. Take a short boat trip to view the statue from the river. Later this afternoon visit Huanglongxi, an ancient town dating back to the Qing Dynasty.
DAY 13: DEPART CHENGDUThis morning is free at leisure before you are transferred to Chengdu airport to board your overnight flight to Australia.
DAY 14: ARRIVE AUSTRALIAArrive home today.
