Day 1: Arrive Beijing
You will be met at Beijing airport by your English-speaking local guide and transferred to your hotel for the next three nights.
Day 2: Beijing
Visit China’s most famous attraction - the Great Wall at the Juyongguan Pass. Next, drive along the scenic Sacred Way to visit the Ming Tombs. Of the 16 Ming Dynasty emperors, 13 are buried in this 40sq km area. Later enjoy a visit to the 15th-century Temple of Heaven, one of the more perfect examples of Ming architecture. (B,L)
Day 3: Beijing
Walk through the expanse of Tiananmen Square, before entering through the outer gates of the Forbidden City, the sacred centre of the Chinese empire for 500 years and home to both the Ming and Qing dynasties. This afternoon explore the Summer Palace, a retreat for emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties. (B,L)
Day 4: Beijing to Zhangjiajie
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Zhangjiajie for a three night stay. The rest of the day is free to enjoy at your leisure. Over the coming days you will explore Zhangjiajie’s renowned sub-tropical forests, waterfalls, mountain ranges, limestone peaks and valleys. The Chinese like to describe the Zhangjiajie scenery as a ‘goddess dancing on a heavenly stage’. (B)
Day 5: Zhangjiajie
Explore the breathtaking inspiration for the film Avatar in the Zhangjiajie Scenic Area. Visit the Tianzhi Mountain, Yuanjiajie (Avatar Mountain) and 10-Mile Gallery. Enjoy a ride on the cable car and outdoor scenic train. (B,L)
Day 6: Zhangjiajie
Discover Zhangjiajie from a different perspective, taking in its unique water attractions. Visit the Huanglong Cave, one of the largest Karst caves in the world. Enjoy a boat ride through the cave. Later, visit Baofeng Lake and relax on a cruise while enjoying the serene backdrop. (B,L)
Day 7: Zhangjiajie to Shanghai
Explore Tianmen Mountain by travelling along the world’s longest scenic mountain cable car (7.2km) to reach the Hanging Garden on one of its peaks. Once you reach the top, walk along the world’s highest glass footpath, suspended 1400m up. You can then make your way to the Tianmen Cave. With an arch span 137m tall, 57m wide and 60m deep, four planes flew under it simultaneously in 1999. In the afternoon, transfer to Zhangjiajie airport and fly to Shanghai for a three night stay. Day 8: Shanghai
Enjoy a full-day tour to some of Shanghai’s most famous attractions. Explore the Old Town (Yuan Bazaar) and the peaceful Yu Garden, the inspiration for willow patterned china. Wander along Nanjing Road and visit the Shanghai Museum to see the fine arts and antiquities on display. (B,L)
Day 9: Shanghai
Visit the historical riverfront area know as the Bund and visit the Xintiandi area to see the 1920s ‘shikumen’ buildings unique to Shanghai. Continue to the nearby Tianzhifang neighbourhood, a famous Shanghai art district. Explore the labyrinth of alleyways, craft stores and coffee shops. This evening enjoy a cruise along a section of the Huangpu River. You will see the neo-classical architecture along the Bund on one side and the many modern buildings in the Pudong area on the other. Day 10: Depart Shanghai
You will be transferred to Shanghai airport where your arrangements end. (B)
