Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th Century due to its favourable port location at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Today it presents a blend of cultures – the modern and the traditional – along with the European and oriental. Modern skyscrapers intermingle with traditional buildings. This unique fusion is what attracts millions of visitors each year.
