With its rich, complex history, vibrant culture and incredible cuisine, Turkey is so much more than the bridge between East and West. Combining influences from the Middle East, the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Central Asia, here you’ll find a captivating mix of the exotic, the ancient and the familiar.

Complex and epic history

The peninsula that modern-day Turkey occupies is home to some of the oldest known settlements in the world. This long history is evident in the country’s remarkable collection of fascinating ruins, including the ancient port city of Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world. The Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have all occupied this historically lucrative Silk Road stopover, and much of today's Turkish way of life is a culmination of these legendary influences

Fantastical landscapes

The diversity of Turkey’s landscapes is quite extraordinary. From the olive groves that fringe its Mediterranean coast to Cappadocia’s otherworldly ‘fairy chimney’ rock formations, the country’s terrain takes on a different persona at every turn. Alpine landscapes offer breath-taking beauty and hold legendary secrets; Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey is said to be the landing place of Noah’s Ark after the flood, and the country’s 1,600 kilometres of coastline host sparkling seas, golden beaches and striking forest-clad cliffsides.

Culinary delights

Arguably the biggest draw in a country with a lot to entice visitors, Turkish food is not only delicious but also a direct route to the heart of Turkish culture. Turkish fare has been influenced by the many civilisations that have occupied its lands, but is mainly a continuance of Ottoman cuisine.

The food here also has much in common with its Mediterranean neighbours - a region renowned for its world-class ingredients and flavours. Sample the classic meze and kebap dishes, accompanied by oil-grilled Agean vegetables and washed down with a tulip-shaped glass of çay. And of course, you’ll need to save some space for dessert, no Turkish meal is complete without a bite of sweet baklava.
