A classic South America itinerary with a tango-worthy twist! Travel between the vibrant cities of Buenos Aires and Rio via the spectacular Iguaçu and take a ride through the Andes on the 'Train to the Clouds'.
Our Essence of Argentina & Brazil itinerary has been intricately designed for those who wish to see iconic sites and magnificent treasures. You'll travel with the assurance that all your arrangements are taken care of, with international flights, accommodation and all the touring listed below. You will be accompanied by our industry-leading National Escorts whose unparalleled knowledge and talent will turn your tour into an unforgettable experience.
Fly to Argentina's flamboyant capital city Buenos Aires, arriving the same day due to crossing the International Date Line. You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel to relax and refresh before the welcome dinner this evening. (D)
An irresistible combination of Latin flair and European elegance, Buenos Aires is a
delight to explore and that's exactly what you'll do today on a city tour. This will include the vibrant districts of La Boca, San Telmo and Recoleta. Later, enjoy a quintessential Argentine experience: the tango! Take a tango class in a local milonga
(tango club) before sitting down to dinner and a sultry tango show. (B,D)
Spend the day just outside the city on the vast, fertile grasslands known as the pampas, on a traditional estancia (ranch). Here you'll get some insight into the life of folk heroes, the gaucho and after a typical Argentinian asado lunch, there will be a fun
folklore show. (B,L)
Transfer to the airport and fly to the north-western city of Salta. Set amongst Andean peaks at 1,152 metres above sea level, Salta is an engaging place with great museums and extravagant colonial edifices. This afternoon you'll tour the city and spend some time at the excellent Museo de Arqueologia de Alta Montana. (B)
The 'Train to the Clouds', one of the world's highest railways, departs from San Antonio de los Cobres and climbs its way into the spectacular heights of the Andes.
Aboard this heritage railway you will chug towards the Chilean border via bridges, tunnels, viaducts, spirals and zigzags, passing along the Lerma Valley and through the otherworldly landscapes of Quebrada del Toro, to the 4,220-metre altitude La Polvorilla Viaduct. Transfer to Purmamarca, a picturesque village of traditional adobe houses. (B)
Spend the day amongst the extraordinary formations and undulating colours of the
Humahuaca Valley. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the rocks of this stark, dry canyon are a swirling rainbow, the hues constantly changing, whilst others have been eroded into all sorts of odd and interesting shapes. Return to Salta. (B)
Say farewell to Salta and the Andes and board a plane over to Puerto Iguazú, the town closest to the incredible natural wonder that is Iguaçu Falls. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B)
On the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguaçu is the largest waterfall system in the world, with hundreds of cascades pouring off the edge of the Parana Plateau. Today you will wander along the Argentinian side of Iguaçu which offers a fantastic overview of the whole of the falls and showcases its power and magnificence. Don't miss the viewpoint of one of the falls' most impressive sights, the Garganta del Diablo. (B)
Pass over the border into Brazil – this side of Iguaçu offers a completely different experience with paths and catwalks to wander. These will lead you to some of the numerous smaller cascades that dance their way along gullies and through lush greenery. Board a plane to Brazil's 'Cidade Maravilhosa', Rio de Janeiro. (B,D)
Clamber onboard a jeep to venture to some of Rio's many wonders! You'll start at the Corcovado, travelling up to the peak by cog train to the spot where the iconic Christ the Redeemer watches over the city. Next, wander through the tropical Tijuca Forest, a rainforest in the heart of the city, before exploring the 19th-century hillside neighbourhood of Santa Teresa, an area with a wonderfully bohemian atmosphere, where you'll also have lunch. (B,L)
Ascend the heights of Sugarloaf Mountain by cable car for breathtaking views over the city, its beaches and the surrounding bay and islands. Continue exploring, making sure to soak up the vibrancy of the atmosphere as you enjoy Rio's sights, including the world-famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Later in the evening, transfer back to Copacabana to visit a samba club, where you can simply tap your foot to the infectious beat and watch the dancing, or dance the night away yourself! (B,L)
This morning after breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Australia, arriving home in 2 days due to crossing the International Date Line once again. (B)
