With a slower rhythm of life and wholly different vibe to mainland British Columbia, Vancouver Island is the place to take a deep breath and commune with nature. The largest of North America’s west coast islands, but with a tiny population, once you’re outside of Victoria, the main city, you’ll find yourself on a backcountry adventure. Quirky communities nestle among ancient forest, the coastline is gloriously rugged and the beaches pristine – all ready and waiting to be explored.
A stark contrast to Vancouver, just across the water, Vancouver Island is a haven for those who love to be outdoors, helped along by one of Canada’s mildest microclimates. There are trails and canopy walkways, waves that are perfect for surfing, bears and whales to spot and, up at the northern end of the island, a sanctuary of pure wilderness that only more intrepid travellers make it to. Towns like Tofino and Ucluelet are free-spirited and relaxed, offering nature to explore – the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve – bear and whale watching cruise, surf breaks, boutique shops and independent restaurants. There is also plenty of First Nations Culture to explore across the island, from urban Victoria to the wilds of the Pacific Rim and north coast, a traditional territory of the Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Kwakwakaw’akw People; Duncan, the “City of Totems” is a great place to start, with over 40 hand-carved totem poles to view.
