That Luang Stupa

Laos’ most important monument, That Luang Stupa has become the symbol of the country and a representation of Laos’ strong affinity with Buddhism. Thought to have been first constructed in around the 3rd century to house a relic, a breastbone, of Buddha – the structure you see today was constructed in 1566, when Vientiane became Laos’ capital. The complex includes two temples and the famous stupa, the top of which is covered in gold leaf. The whole thing is quintessential Laos architecture, with many references to the culture and identity of the country.
