Mexico City Holidays

Home to over 25 million people, Mexico City sprawls across a plateau in Central Mexico, surrounded by mountains. A popular starting point for many Mexico holidays, this high energy, dynamic capital is endlessly fascinating, at the same time edgy as laidback, bohemian and cosmopolitan.

The city of today was begun by the Spanish in the 16^th century, built directly on top of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, the empire that Hernán Cortés and his conquistadors quashed to create the viceroyalty of ‘New Spain’. It is around The Zocalo, the city’s main plaza, that you can see a snapshot of this history – archaeological ruins of Tenochtitlan alongside magnificent colonial architecture like the cathedral and Palacio Nacional. Beyond the historic centre are plenty of charming neighbourhoods – there’s Roma and Condesa which give an arty vibe, with small galleries, excellent restaurants and buzzing nightlife, Coyoacan - where you’ll find the house of Frida Kahlo, now a museum – all the way out to Xochimilco, once independent but swallowed by the city, where you’ll find the remnants of canals and waterways constructed by the Aztecs.     

A microcosm of Mexico’s rich and colourful culture, traditional but modern in its innovative design scene, full of incredibly foods that encompass gastronomy from across the country, to excellent museums displaying ancient artefacts to 20^th century art, this Latin American capital is an urban experience extraordinaire.
