Few waterways have shaped global trade quite like the Panama Canal. Cruise through sections of this engineering marvel, passing through the Miraflores, Pedro Miguel and Gatun Locks as vast ships journey between the Atlantic and Pacific. Later, step back in time among the plazas, churches and pastel façades of Casco Viejo, Panama City's atmospheric UNESCO listed historic quarter.
Venture into the lush rainforest of Soberanía National Park, one of Panama's richest wildlife habitats. Continue to Gatun Lake and take a boat through the forest-fringed waters of the Panama Canal, keeping watch for monkeys, crocodiles and an impressive variety of tropical birdlife.
A short flight brings you to David, gateway to Panama's western highlands. From here, climb into the cool mountain landscapes of Boquete, situated beneath Volcán Barú. Coffee plantations, forested slopes and colourful gardens surround this charming town, leaving the remainder of the day free to unwind and enjoy the refreshing highland climate.
Panama's volcanic soils and cool mountain climate produce some of the world's most sought-after coffee. At the renowned Don Pepe estate, follow the journey from cultivation and harvesting to roasting and brewing, learning about sustainable farming methods before sampling exceptional coffees, including the celebrated Geisha variety.
Leave the highlands behind and cross the mountains towards Panama's Caribbean coast. A short boat ride completes the journey to Bocas del Toro, an idyllic archipelago of forested islands, colourful waterfront homes and crystal clear waters. Settle into your hotel and embrace the laid-back rhythm of island life.
Set out on a full-day boat excursion through the idyllic Bocas del Toro Archipelago. Cruise through Dolphin Bay in search of playful dolphins, snorkel amongst vibrant coral reefs at Coral Cay and unwind on the powder-soft beaches of the Zapatilla Islands, surrounded by the protected waters of Bastimentos National Marine Park.
Cacao has played an important role in the traditions of Panama's indigenous Ngäbe people for generations. Walk through an organic plantation, discover how chocolate is crafted from bean to bar using time-honoured techniques, then enjoy the opportunity to share a traditional local meal with members of the community.
Cross into Costa Rica and continue to Puerto Viejo, a colourful Caribbean town fringed by palm-lined beaches and lush rainforest. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure, soaking up its laid-back Afro-Caribbean atmosphere.
Gain a fascinating insight into Costa Rica's indigenous heritage at the Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve with members of the Bribri community. Learn about traditional customs, medicinal plants and cacao cultivation, and discover how knowledge has been shaped by the rainforest and passed down through generations.
Travel inland to the rainforest region of Sarapiquí. Enjoy a free afternoon to relax amidst tropical forests, winding rivers and abundant wildlife.
The landscapes change once again as you journey to Costa Rica's Northern Plains and the Arenal Volcano region. Towering above rainforest, hot springs and fertile countryside, this iconic peak dominates the region, offering spectacular scenery and abundant opportunities to spot local wildlife.
Explore the Arenal National Park on a guided walk through rainforest and ancient lava fields, learning about the volcano's fascinating geological history while keeping watch for native wildlife. Afterwards, enjoy time to relax and appreciate the tranquil surroundings.
Travel to the misty highlands of Monteverde, where the journey itself is part of the experience, combining a scenic crossing of Lake Arenal with a drive through Costa Rica's beautiful countryside. This evening, venture into the cloud forest on a guided night walk, when frogs, insects and other nocturnal creatures emerge.
Wake to the cool mountain air before exploring Monteverde's cloud forest canopy on a hanging bridges tour. Stroll amongst the treetops, taking in sweeping forest views while searching for colourful birds, mammals and the rich plant life that thrives within this unique and fragile ecosystem, accompanied by your expert naturalist guide.
Continue to San José, Costa Rica's energetic capital, where historic neighbourhoods, bustling markets and a thriving café culture offer a final glimpse into local life. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure before your journey home.
