Your city tour of Singapore begins with a bumboat ride along the Singapore River docking at Merlion Park at Esplanade Bridge. Take a drive around the Civic District past the Padang, Cricket Club, Parliament House and City Hall, visit one of Singapore’s oldest Hokkien temples, Thian Hock Keng Temple, and the National Orchid Garden. Then take a ride on the 165-metre Singapore Flyer. Tonight, Fullerton Hotel general manager Giovanni will welcome you for dinner. Explore Singapore’s Chinatown area with Luke and your guide. Visit the exotic Wet Market and learn about spices used in local cooking, then head to shop houses and learn the history of early Chinese immigrants. Stop by Ann Siang Hill, the site of one of the oldest Chinese burial grounds in Singapore, now home to quirky shops and trendy restaurants. Transfer to Woodlands Railway Station and board the Eastern & Orient Express where Luke and Kate will join you. Afternoon tea served in your cabin. Later Luke will present a culinary talk and Kate will share insights on links between crime and restaurants. Enjoy a cocktail in the Bar Car. Dress for a dinner of eastern and western specialties. Enjoy breakfast in your cabin as you travel through the westcoast towns of Malaysia. Take an off-train excursion with Luke and Kate, or enjoy the luxuries on board. Off-train excursion: travel to Labu Kubong, a Malaysian village among paddy fields. Watch a martial arts dance, sample local produce and take a guided walk through rice paddies and local plantations. Optional activity for advanced trekkers: take a hill trek, meet a naturalist and climb to the peak for views and refreshments. Rejoin at Padang Rengas Station. Lunch on board. Disembark at River Kwai Station. You have the option of three day excursions. You can cruise along the Khwae Yai River and view Thai teakwood houses along the banks. Learn the history of the infamous railway and bridge built by allied prisoners in World War II and visit the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. Or transfer to Nong Kao village for an hourlong bicycle tour through rice fields and stop at a farm for refreshments. Return to a Traditional Thai Wooden House for a herbal infusion. Or visit a wet market and an acclaimed rice noodle house. Then board a river raft and watch a Thai cooking class as you sail the River Kwai. Lunch onboard. Enjoy a cooking class with chef Narain from The Oriental Thai Cooking School before enjoying the chef’s creations. Visit Bangkok’s Grand Palace and ‘Wat Phra Kaew’, a temple home to the revered Emerald Buddha. Later, see the city’s famous canals on the Thonburi side of the river aboard a long tail boat.
