Upon arrival in Sapporo, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a three-night stay.
Explore Sapporo with a Local Guide. Start at the Sapporo Clock Tower and the Hokkaido Former Government Office, one of the most exquisite examples of Meiji architecture. Head to the Sapporo Beer Museum and the
Sapporo Beer Garden, where you will try the Hokkaido specialty Genghis Khan, a popular dish of BBQ lamb and other meats. A glass of beer is included as part of your lunch. Your final stop is Shiroi Koibito Park, a theme park with various chocolate-related exhibits. The Shiroi Koibito cookie is one of the most famous souvenirs from Hokkaido. You can try your hand at decorating your own cookie. (B,L)
Travel by train for a half-day tour of Otaru, a pretty port town and one of northern Japan's most romantic places. Take a walking tour of the Canal
Area and Sakaimachi old town. Return to Sapporo by train. The afternoon is at your leisure. (B)
Transfer to the airport and fly to Tokyo Haneda airport. Upon arrival, transfer to your Tokyo hotel for a two-night stay. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. (B)
Begin touring at Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji. Take a walk down Omotesando, a broad tree-lined avenue. Head to Asakusa, Tokyo's old town, and wander down Nakamise Street and explore Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple. End your day in Hamarikyu Garden, an Edo-period Japanese garden. (B)
Make your own way to Tokyo station and take the bullet train to Nagano. You can continue on to Yudanaka or stop for some self-guided touring. Take a local train into the Japanese Alps to stay in the onsen resort town of Yudanaka. A short ride in the shuttle bus will take you to your ryokan. Dinner will be a Japanese traditional kaiseki meal. (B,D)
Your touring today is self-guided. Head to Jigokudani Yaen Koen and take a leisurely hike through a forested valley to see the famous snow monkeys bathing in the hot waters. In the afternoon, you may wish to visit the charming
traditional town of Obuse. Another amazing dinner will be served at your ryokan. (B,D)
Return to Nagano by local train and take the Shinkansen bullet train to Kanazawa. Upon arrival at Kanazawa Station, you will make your own way to your hotel. During the Edo Period, Kanazawa served as the seat of the Maeda Clan, the second most powerful feudal clan after the Tokugawa. (B)
Wander through Kenroku-en Garden, visit the Nagamachi Samurai district and Nomura Samurai House. Farewell your guide, and take the Thunderbird Express train to Kyoto and make your own way to your hotel. (B)
Kyoto is the legacy of ancient Japan, full of tranquil temples, silk-clad geisha and sublime gardens. Start with Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. Continue to Nijo Castle then wander down Nishiki Market, known as 'Kyoto's kitchen'. You can choose to end the day at either Kiyomizudera Temple or Sanjusangendo Temple. (B)
After check-out this morning, transfer to Kansai International Airport, where your arrangements end. (B)
