History & culture

History & culture

As one of the world’s four ancient civilisations and a history stretching back over 4,000 years, it’s little wonder that China boasts an incredible richness of history and culture.

Today, China is an ancient culture reinvented; whilst some aspects of life remain as they have for thousands of years, especially in rural areas, many aspects are being embellished by the new, with state-of-the-art modernity found in every town and city. A holiday through China is a voyage through time with endless discoveries. Because of this, the rewards of travelling through China are endless. Whether you come looking for ancient heritage or contemporary culture.

Natural wonders

Natural wonders

China’s landscapes and natural scenery is vast and full of contrasts. Enjoy a tranquil cruise through the lush countryside of the Li River, dotted with towering limestone peaks, marvel at the towering cliffs of the Three Gorges on a Yangtze cruise or get up close to China’s most celebrated bear, the adorable panda in Chengdu. From the snow-capped mountains of Yunnan to the rolling dunes of the Taklaman Desert the diversity is astonishing. The sheer diversity of China’s natural wonders is nothing short of breathtaking.

Culinary Delights

Culinary Delights

Get ready to explore the diverse culinary landscape of China. Each province is known for its own style of cooking which shapes the Chinese cuisine we all know and love today. Few know that there is 1,366 miles between the traditional dish of Peking duck and the delights of Dim Sum, so that’s why we make sure that there is time in each destination on our tours to try the local delicacies. From a spicy hot pot in Chengdu, to hand-stretched noodles in Kunming, you will embark on an adventure of the senses.

The Great wall

The Great wall

China’s most iconic sight, the Great Wall, stretches from Shanhaiguan on the Bohai Sea to Lop Lake in the Gobi Desert – around 4,000 miles.  Many sections of the wall are easily accessible from Beijing. Whether you are after an easy walk to explore well preserved sections, or perhaps to see a slightly wilder area of the wall, snaking-through-the-barren-hills type experience, the Great Wall will certainly be one of the most exciting, magnificent, and unbelievable things you’ll ever see.

Review for Wonders of China
Wendy Wu Tours are superb.
The Wonders of China tour encompasses all major attractions and ‘must sees’ in China.
A plus is all meals are included, and entrance fees.
There are some optional excursions at very reasonable prices.
From arrival in Beijing to departure from Shanghai, we were looked after every step of the way, by our guide Sean, plus local guides.
I cannot speak highly enough of Sean. His patience was limitless!
Was the tour value for money? Absolutely - I am amazed Wendy Wu can offer such a quality experience, with top class hotels, all meals, many excursions, for the price.
It was the holiday of a lifetime.

Booking Experience for Gems of China
I had a professional and prompt response from Cheryl following my initial email to Wendy Wu. She was able to arrange for me to join a friend on their Gems of China tour in September. When I telephoned to finalise my booking I found her to be very efficient, and as she herself had done the very same tour last year, she was able to give me useful advice based on her own experience. Overall the telephone conversation gave me great confidence that I had booked with a caring and extremely professional tour company staffed by people who know what they are doing and care about doing it well. I very much look forward to my tour and feel confident that it will be as professionally executed as my booking experience has been. Thank you Wendy Wu.

Review for Additional Night Beijing|Gems of China
What an amazing trip the Gems of China was. So many wonderful highlights. The trip opened our eyes to China as a tourist destination. Our national guide Ni Fan (Ivan) made us feel so welcome and was so great at making our trip a breeze. He organised everything so seamlessly. He was very calm and professional when two members of our party were injured in separate incidents. Another highlight of the trip was our group. A wonderful group of people.
We would highly recommend this tour and if you are lucky enough to get Ni Fan as your national tour guide you are in for an amazing tour.

Review for Wonders of China
Best tour holiday we had. There is always room for improvement. Just a couple of suggestions:
1. Before flying would suggest to let know meeting time with the tour guide at the hotel.
2. Coaches to have a facility to charge a mobile phone.
3. A separate table for vegetarians as there is a big demand for them to travel to China. Non-vegetarians do not share vegetarian dishes.
Had a great holiday!

  • We grade our tours on level of activity and amount of walking involved, which can be found on the tour pages on the website and in our brochures, under ‘Physical Rating’. We grade the tours as follows:

    • Level 1 – A reasonable level of fitness is required, but its more about spending time on your feet rather than covering large distances.
    • Level 2 – This will involve a little more time on your feet than level 1 tours and may involve a bit more walking or steps.
    • Level 3 – A good level of fitness is required, as around 2-3 hours of walking will be required per day. Other activities such as cycling, may be included and walking longer distances.
    • Level 4 – Level 4 is similar to level 3 but the activities may be of longer duration or a more challenging terrain.
    • Level 5 – You’ll need to be fit and adventurous to participate in these tours as in some cases you will be active for most of the day on tough terrain or have physically demanding activities.
