History & culture

History & culture

As one of the world’s four ancient civilisations and a history stretching back over 4,000 years, it’s little wonder that China boasts an incredible richness of history and culture.

Today, China is an ancient culture reinvented; whilst some aspects of life remain as they have for thousands of years, especially in rural areas, many aspects are being embellished by the new, with state-of-the-art modernity found in every town and city. A holiday through China is a voyage through time with endless discoveries. Because of this, the rewards of travelling through China are endless. Whether you come looking for ancient heritage or contemporary culture.

Natural wonders

Natural wonders

China’s landscapes and natural scenery is vast and full of contrasts. Enjoy a tranquil cruise through the lush countryside of the Li River, dotted with towering limestone peaks, marvel at the towering cliffs of the Three Gorges on a Yangtze cruise or get up close to China’s most celebrated bear, the adorable panda in Chengdu. From the snow-capped mountains of Yunnan to the rolling dunes of the Taklaman Desert the diversity is astonishing. The sheer diversity of China’s natural wonders is nothing short of breathtaking.

Culinary Delights

Culinary Delights

Get ready to explore the diverse culinary landscape of China. Each province is known for its own style of cooking which shapes the Chinese cuisine we all know and love today. Few know that there is 1,366 miles between the traditional dish of Peking duck and the delights of Dim Sum, so that’s why we make sure that there is time in each destination on our tours to try the local delicacies. From a spicy hot pot in Chengdu, to hand-stretched noodles in Kunming, you will embark on an adventure of the senses.

The Great wall

The Great wall

China’s most iconic sight, the Great Wall, stretches from Shanhaiguan on the Bohai Sea to Lop Lake in the Gobi Desert – around 4,000 miles.  Many sections of the wall are easily accessible from Beijing. Whether you are after an easy walk to explore well preserved sections, or perhaps to see a slightly wilder area of the wall, snaking-through-the-barren-hills type experience, the Great Wall will certainly be one of the most exciting, magnificent, and unbelievable things you’ll ever see.

Review for A China Experience
We both had an excellent experience and would definitely recommend Wendy wu tours

Review for China Delights
Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Our guide Amanda was outstanding. All the accommodation was good and the food fine. Nothing negative to say, though perhaps grading could be moved upwards from moderate as the pace was quite quick at times.

The glories of China tour is excellent, Wendy Wu organisation works so very well, taking us through very crowded venues efficiently allowing us good time to see as well as be told the the history of places. Would recommend to any interested party

Review for Gems of China
Jason, the National guide, was an absolute gem himself. Wendy Wu are so fortunate to have him as part of the team.
The tour was everything I hoped it would be and more. The Forbidden Palace was a delight, especially with so many in national costumes. The Terracotta Warriors were a dream come true and my main reason for travelling to China. However, the pandas of Chengdu were a very close second and hold a special place in my heart. There were so many memorable experiences that I will treasure and I am so very happy that I chose Wendy Wu as my tour operator.
My only constructive feedback is that the trip should have been rated as a 3 level difficulty. It was very full on and quite exhausting. Also it would be good to have more detail about the additional shows and excursions, as I felt 'all showed out' before the end of the trip and unsure whether I had seen the best on offer. The inability to switch off the announcements on the cruise was an annoyance as I had specifically booked this trip to have 3 days of rest and this was not made possible by such early and repeated announcements.
Thank you

Review for Wonders of China
From our arrival in Beijing to our departure from Shanghai this was an excellent holiday with our guide, Betty, going above and beyond to make sure we had a fabulous time.
There were quite a few early starts - this isn't a trip if your idea of a holiday is relaxing with a good book - but there was so much to see!
In Beijing we saw Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden Palace, the Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall and more.
We then took a bullet train to Xian (amazing experience - totally smooth journey travelling at up to 250mph). We explored the city including the Muslim food quarter and the restored city walls and then went to the Terracotta Warriors.
The next day we took an early flight to Yichang and made our way to Maoping docks near the Three Gorges on the Yangtze river where we boarded the almost brand new Victoria Isabella. The weather was dreadful for our 4 days on the boat but the facilities and staff were excellent and we did get a few excursions.
We left the boat at Chongqing and went to the zoo where we saw pandas (a real highlight) and many other animals. A second bullet train took us to Guilin where we spent a night in the Waterfall Hotel (at 2030 every day a massive waterfall cascades down the outside of the building).
The next day, the sun came out and we took a boat trip down the beautiful River Li to Yangshuo. After a night there, we made our way back through the countryside to Guilin, seeing local people and the rice harvest.
After a second night in Guilin (a small but beautiful city) we took a flight to Shanghai, arriving in the early evening. A boat trip on the river Huangpu lets you see the Bund area with the most amazing lights display.
Our final day was spent exploring the city of Shanghai including the beautiful Yu gardens.
China is spotlessly clean. There are reasonable, free public toilets everywhere and the people are friendly (several conversation attempts via Google translate). There are security cameras and police everywhere and you are constantly asked for your passport but it never felt oppressive.

Review for Gems of China
Excellent, extremely well organised tour with an exciting varied itinerary that covered many of China's iconic sights. Lovely group of people of varying ages, delicious meals and comfortable hotels. Jason, our national guide, was wonderful. He had a great sense of humour, was very knowledgeable and took great care of the group every step of the way. This was my first organised tour and I would thoroughly recommend Wendy Wu to anyone thinking of booking an adventure.

Review for China & Tibet Discovery
The organisation was excellant, our guide Jackie excellant, helpful, informative and very knowledgeable. The local guides were very good as well.
The trip covered a huge amount of terrain, different sites and whilst there was a lot of travel, it all worked very smoothly.
The hotels were, largely, good and we were offered lots of local experiences, including dance shows and local food.

Review for Wonders of China
I have recently returned from a Wendy Wu Wonders of China Tour (10-24 Oct) and wish to place on record how much I enjoyed the tour. That enjoyment stemmed not only from the comprehensive Itinerary and places visited but also to the highly knowledgeable, hard working, dedicated and caring Tour Guide 'Betty' (an English name given to herself to make it easier for us to address her). She spoke excellent English and led the tour with a smile and sense of humour but always ensured the group knew exactly where to be and at what time whilst giving us detailed information about the place(s) we were visiting and their history and heritage which, of course, enabled us to more fully understand the purposes of what we saw, the origins of what we saw and so much more. I cannot speak highly enough of this lady and if I were to visit China again, I would hope that 'Betty' would be my guide again.

The meals and wide range of Chinese cuisine we experienced were also first class with all tastes catered for.

Can I also add that the information and advice provided pre-tour by Wendy Wu Tours was excellent and ensured that I was fully prepared for this tour and helped ensure my enjoyment and fulfillment whilst on this tour. Thank you.

Review for Wonders of China
I don't leave reviews as a matter of course, but i will say everything was excellent. The party i travelled with were quite diverse in character, ranging from, i have been everywhere people and know it all, to the most down to earth people i have ever the meet, from the North East, South West, and Scotland. The antipodean members seem to have been everywhere and had great pleasure of informing us. The following i would like to mention. Jean + Paul, Elizabeth(Libby), Sue, Vicky, Ron, Claudia + Sandra(sorry for pulling your leg all the time), and Ian(i have told them not to build the wall any higher) ha-ha. i hope Medina is on the road to recovery. The tour rep Louis was excellent and the first local rep Lindsey was joy to behold, both did outstanding jobs and are a credit to your company. The tour was full on, but this is what we signed up for, a positive response which would indicate that a good time was had by all, Well Wendy Wu, in the words of the Bard, I think you nailed it. I don't have anything planned as of yet as my business now needs my full attention. Now to blow my own trumpet, Ron asked me what my hobbies were, i said philately(stamp collecting) which is true, but my real pleasure is restoring Grade 11 listed buildings. I think that is all.
All my love to everyone,
May your life have more up's than down's
May your God go with you,
Love

Review for Gems of China
The itinerary was perfect. The National Guide Jason was fantastic and incredibly helpful. The Local Guides very knowledgeable.
You need to be pretty fit as there is a lot of walking and stairs/steps involved.
Apparently there were some moans about lack of free time....the itinerary is very clear in my view that this is a very full on tour and if free time for shopping etc is required this is not the holiday for you.

Review for Glories of China
My husband and I travelled with Wendy Wu tours to China in September this year. I would like to give a big shout out to Wendy Wu and the fabulous tour guides we had along the way. Cathy (our main guide) was just superb and made our trip truly memorable. The food, the accommodation, the wonderful shows we saw and of course the spectacular sights of China, made this trip better than i ever thought possible. Thank you for the fabulous memories.
