Upon arrival at Ashgabat airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a four-night stay. Ashgabat means 'city of love' in Arabic.
Explore the ruins of Nisa Fortress, the capital of ancient Parthia and a former imperial residence. The fortress was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007. Visit the Independence Monument, one of the city's most popular attractions. It stands 118 metres high with the top crowned with a crescent moon and five stars. Continue to Ertugrul Gazi Mosque, one of the most beautiful mosques in Turkmenistan. In the afternoon, wander through the National Museum of History and Ethnography (closed on Tuesdays) and the colourful Russian Bazaar. (B)
Early this morning, transfer to the airport for your 40-minute flight to Mary. Upon arrival, head east towards Bayram-Ali, one the major ancient archaeological sites in Central Asia and home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Merv. This location played an important role in the development of the Silk Road. After exploring several key locations, you will return to Mary and visit the local History Museum. In the late afternoon, fly back to Ashgabat. (B)
After breakfast, travel to Arkadash Stud Farm near Geok Depe, passing a former Tekke stronghold from the late 19th century. During your time at the farm, you will have the chance to meet the 'winged' Akhal-Teke horses. This remarkable breed is one of the oldest in existence and well-known for its athleticism, stamina and outstanding movement. Return to Ashgabat, with a stop en route at Kipchak to see the largest mosque in Turkmenistan and the family mausoleum of the first president of the country. In the afternoon, visit a carpet museum. (B)
After check-out this morning you will be transferred to Ashgabat airport where your arrangements end. (B)
