Nestled on the Pacific east coast half way between Tokyo and the northern tip of Honshu, Miyagi is a special place of snow-capped mountains and coastal scenery of almost heart-breaking beauty. Tear your glance away from the scenic majesty for just a moment though and you will also find historic castles, samurai traditions, cosmopolitan cities and a calendar jam-packed with fascinating festivals and events.

Miyagi’s capital Sendai is a lush metropolis hemmed in by beautiful mountains. Streets are lined with thousands of trees, that lend the city an emerald hue in the spring and summer and a glorious amber blaze in the autumn. Sendai's nickname, the ‘The City of Trees’, is richly deserved.

Miyagi’s most famous attraction is Matsushima Bay, home to over 260 pine covered islands and widely considered to be one of Japan’s most scenic sites. Pilgrims, artists and poets have journeyed to Matsushima for over a thousand years to witness the ethereal beauty of the bay. Little wonder many consider it a paradise on earth.

Away from the sublime coastal beauty, the scenery is no less dramatic. the towering volcanic peak of Mount Zhao is snowbound for half the year, a playground for winter sports enthusiasts, but the spring thaw reveals a stunning emerald crater lake, expansive views and miles of wonderful hiking trails.
